for everyone wishing to understand basslines

here is the 5 Golden Rules of Bass

"When substituting in a II,V,I chord progression in Modes of the same pitch- Does I, represent the first chord of the mode or its actual scale?"

answer:the first chord of the mode

I V I in F major is Gm7 C7 Fmaj7

you can choose any II from any F mode as a substitue for Gm7

so subgroup two exchanging II's for IV's

II in F Dorian(Eb) is Gm7 or the IV chord Bb7

II in F Phrygian(Db) is Gbmaj7 or the IV chord Bbm7

II in F Lydian(C) is G7 or the IV chord Bm7b5

II in F Myxolydian(Bb) is Gm7 or the IV chord Bbmaj7

II in F Natural(Ab) is Gm7b5 or the IV chord Bbm7

II in F Locrian(Gb) is Gbmaj7 or the IV chord Bbm7

Vs generally want to be dom7's

subgroup three exchanging V's for VII's

V in F Dorian(Eb) is Cm7 or the VII chord Ebmaj7

V in F Phrygian(Db) is Cm7b5 or the VII chord Ebm7

V in F Lydian(C) is Cmaj7 (sounds awful) or the VII chord Em7

V in F Myxolydian(Bb) is Cm7 or the VII chord Ebmaj7

V in F Natural(Ab) is Cm7 or the VII chord Eb7

V in F Locrian(Gb) is Bmaj7 or the VII chord Ebm7

h then there's substitutes for the I chord Fmaj7

so any F chord barring the Fm7b5 because it sounds like a II and never a I

subgroup one allows I III and VI to be substituted for each other

I III VI in F major Fmaj7 Am7 Dm7

I III VI in F Dorian Fm7 Abmaj7 Dm7b5

I III VI in F Phrygian Fm7 Ab7 Dbmaj7

I III VI in F Lydian Fmaj7 Am7 Dm7

I III VI in F Myxolydian F7 Am7b5 Dm7

I III VI in F Natural Minor Fm7 Abmaj7 Dbmaj7

I III VI in F Locrian Fm7b5 Abm7 Db7

and there's more...........yep

when you have to support the melody

these possibilities are decimated

here's some of my favorites

instead of Gm7 C7 Fmaj7

you could play these

Gm9 Eb9 Fmaj7

Gbmaj7 Bmaj7 Dbmaj7
